Simple Ways to Find More Joy in Daily Life

As adults, it can be easy to lose the sense of fun and wonder we once had as children. Our responsibilities can turn our days into one long grind of getting things done, and taking care of other people. Sometimes, even the things that should normally be fun can just seem like additional demands on our time and energy.

The more we rush about trying to get “everything” done, the more stressed we become, and the less energy we have to spend time with our kids, or to pursue things we enjoy. Our relationships struggle, bringing additional stress, and this in turn leads to struggling even more to get everything done. If we’re not careful, it can turn into a vicious and self perpetuating cycle.

How do you find things that bring you joy?

Sometimes I find myself falling into this trap of trying to do it all. When I catch myself doing this, I know that something’s gotta give. Luckily, there are some pretty simple changes that can make a world of differece. Here are several ways that I have found to bring more joy and peace back into the moments of my day, when it is lacking.

How can I improve my joy in life?

  1. Make time for quiet and reflection.
  2. Be intentional about reconnecting with your spouse.
  3. Build special times with your kids into your daily routines.
  4. Make time for hobbies.
  5. Find ways to make boring tasks more fun. 
  6. Find ways to involve your family in the chores.
  7. Slow down and live more fully in the present. 
  8. Look for the little and simple joys. 
  9. Change your attitude.
  10. Realize and cherish your favorite times of the day instead of just rushing through them. 
  11. Find the beauty in things that don’t inherently seem beautiful.
  12. Go outside and enjoy nature.
  13. Turn on some music.
  14. Be silly with your kids. 
  15. Let go of perfection. 
  16. Brew a cup of herbal tea, and relish the first refreshing sip. 
  17. See through the eyes of your child.
  18. Notice little things, like color and texture.
  19. Smile at others. 
  20. View every moment and every person as a gift.
  21. Be ok with making mistakes.
  22. Apologize when you are rude to your spouse of kids.
  23. Have some “me time”.
  24. Build enjoyable routines.
